The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a global, comprehensive agreement addressing all aspects of biological diversity: genetic resources, species, and ecosystems.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information.

FAO's Animal Production and Health Division is entrusted with FAO's programme on animal production, animal health and related information and policy work.

Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is a permanent forum where governments discuss and negotiate matters relevant to genetic resources for food and agriculture. The main objectives of the CGRFA are to ensure the conservation and sustainable utilization of genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use, for present and future generations.

A communication and information tool called the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) is being developed by FAO for the implementation of the Global Strategy. The objective of DAD-IS is to assist countries and country networks, by providing extensive searchable databases, tools, guidelines, a library, links and contacts for the better management of all animal genetic resources used in food and agriculture.

The European Regional Focal Point for Animal Genetic Resources (ERFP) is the European implementation of FAO's Global Strategy for the management of farm animal genetic resources.

LEAD (Livestock, Environment And Development) targets the protection and enhancement of natural resources which are affected by livestock production and processing and also focuses on poverty reduction and public health enhancement through appropriate forms of livestock development.

RBI - Rare Breeds International is the only international non-governmental organisation with a mandate for the conservation of AnGR. RBI is an umbrella organisation which unites, facilitates and supports the work of both non-governmental and governmental groups at regional, national and local level, and of individuals. RBI conducts research at an international level. For example, breeds which have a breeding population in more than one country are monitored with the benefit of grassroots information from members.

The SAVE Foundation acts as European umbrella organization for the promotion and coordination of activieties for the conservation of endangered breeds of domestic animals and cultivated plant varieties in the form of live populations.

The Canadian Farm Animal Genetic Resources Foundation was founded in 1996 with it’s mission to support the conservation of farm animal genetic resources and assure there is an adequate reservoir of bio-diversity for future needs.

Centre for Biodiversity - Danish Non-Governmental information centre
The Centre is an independent Danish information centre established in 1995. Its aim is to provide information about preserving the man-made diversity of crops and livestock breeds - not in a remote and exclusive gene bank but at grass-roots level out in the backyard so that the general public can once again enjoy the living cultural heritage.

Rare Breeds Canada is a federally registered charitable organization formed in 1987 dedicated to conserving, evaluating and studying heritage, rare and minor breeds of Canadian farm animals.

The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand was formed to conserve, record and promote these breeds with the particular aim of maintaining genetic diversity within our livestock species.

Rare Breeds Trust of Australia. The principal purpose of the Trust is to protect and encourage the conservation and breeding of endangered domestic farm livestock in Australia to ensure their survival worldwide.

Rare Breeds Survival Trust is the leading conservation charity working to restore Britain’s native livestock breeds to their rightful place in our countryside. We receive no government support - our work is funded entirely by membership subscriptions, donations and legacies. Our purpose is to secure the continued existence and viability of the United Kingdom’s native farm animal genetic resources (FAnGR).
